How it works

A storm like this is what homeowners insurance is built for. Here's how to make it easy.

1

Check your address

See if the Oct 21 hail hit your home. Most damage can't be seen from the ground.

2

Get your free packet

It's the difference between a bumpy back-and-forth with your insurer and a smooth, easy road to your claim.

3

Get a free inspection

From our local roofer, or use your own.

What's in your free packet

  • Proof your home was in the storm's path
  • Your deductible, in plain English
  • The chalk-trick list for your roofer
  • Simple steps to file

🀝 We're neighbors, not insurance agents, adjusters or lawyers, and we don't tell you what to do. Your insurance company makes every coverage decision.

See what you get

The good stuff in green. The stuff to avoid in red.

You get this free

Your claim packet

Your coverage, the chalk list, and the filing steps in one place. Send it to your roofer with one tap.

What gets claims paid

A chalked roof

Every hit circled, a test square on each slope. The adjuster counts them on the spot, with your roofer standing there.

Watch out for this

A contract not to sign

Signed before anyone delivers materials or swings a hammer. Learn the six clauses to look for.

Have your roofer meet the adjuster

It makes or breaks a claim. Jason at Local Boys Contracting shows up for it.

Every hit gets a chalk circle, so the adjuster can count them on the spot.
  1. 1

    Every hit circled

    Chalk around each hail hit.

  2. 2

    Photos ready

Photos, measurements and a price, before the adjuster arrives.

  3. 3

    Nothing missed

Patio covers, vents, gutters and A/C units too.

  4. 4

    Right the first time

A rushed first visit is hard to fix later.

Using your own roofer? Your packet has a checklist for them.

Minor but real downsides

Small next to a roof, but you should know them. Tap one to read more.

A claims-free discount may reset

If you have one. For Luis, that's about $1,000, next to $20,000 of roof damage.

The claim shows on your home's record

Insurers can see it for up to 7 years. That's why the free inspection comes first.

Several past claims can affect renewal

One storm claim is usually fine. If you've had a few lately, check your free claims record first.

Rates may rise anyway

After a big storm, rates often rise across the area whether you file or not.

🚩 Door-knocker red flags

Arizona law protects you.

β€œSign today”

You can cancel a storm-repair contract for any reason within 4 business days.

A.R.S. Β§ 32-1158.02(C)

Signed something? Look for wording like this

Your insurance money goes to them
β€œOwner assigns all insurance benefits to Contractor and names Contractor as joint payee on all claim payments.”

Your claim checks need their signature, or go straight to them, before any work is done.

A public adjuster you pay for
β€œOwner agrees to retain a licensed public adjuster. Adjuster fees are paid by Owner from claim proceeds.”

A public adjuster takes a cut of your claim. For a clear hail claim like this one, most homeowners don't need one. It's your choice, not a requirement.

A big fee to walk away
β€œIf Owner cancels after insurance approval, Owner owes Contractor 25% of the approved claim amount.”

That fee can apply before anyone delivers materials or swings a hammer. In Arizona you can still cancel within 4 business days of signing, or within 72 hours of a claim denial.

Power of attorney
β€œOwner grants Contractor power of attorney to endorse checks and communicate with Owner's insurer on Owner's behalf.”

They could sign your name and speak for you. Arizona doesn't let roofers negotiate your claim.

They pick your materials
β€œContractor shall select all materials, colors, and products at its sole discretion.”

It's your house, but you may not get a say in the tile, shingle, foam, or color that goes on it.

The risk lands on you
β€œOwner is responsible for any amounts not paid by insurance, and releases Contractor from liability for delays, damage, or code upgrades.”

If the insurer pays less, or something goes wrong, you could owe the difference.

Wording varies. These are examples of what to look for, not quotes from any one company. All of it is usually signed before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Does this cost anything?

No. The check, packet and inspection are free. If your claim is approved, you only pay your deductible.

Will filing raise my premium?

It might. A claims-free discount may reset, and the claim stays on your record. Ask your agent how your insurer handles storm claims.

If I open a claim and change my mind, does it still count?

It can. Many insurers record a claim once it's opened, even with no payout. That's why the free inspection comes first.

What if the damage is barely more than my deductible?

You'd only get the amount over your deductible, and still have a claim on your record. Get the estimate first, then decide.

I don't know my deductible.

Snap a photo of your policy in the free check, and we'll tell you in seconds.

Can the roofer handle my claim for me?

No. In Arizona, roofers can't handle your claim. They can be there when the adjuster inspects, and you stay in charge.

Someone knocked and I signed. Now what?
